The Heat

In that heat, even the smallest gesture felt like an offense. To
move an arm, to reach for a word, to raise one's eyes: everything
spent an energy the body had already, by instinct, decided to save.
There was a collective economy of movement, a mute agreement
between people and the stagnant air. No one said anything.
Breathing was labor enough.
